This does pose a problem for laminated packaging, as these concepts often use different materials together, to create a group of attributes that a monomaterial would never be able to match. Unless, suppliers use concepts that consolidate multiple materials back to one material. And as laminated packaging tends to move towards single materials one could wonder if there remains any point in laminating at all. We set apart why we believe there does!
Our first point is somewhat subjective, but in our experience laminated packaging tends to look and feel somewhat more sturdy and premium than monomaterials. The extra thickness and content in between the layers creates a less flimsy feel. When you print a monomaterial you need to print on the outside. With laminated packaging we print in between the layers: keeping it safe from the outside world, but also keeping it away from your precious product. Figure 2.
Material suitability Although sheet lamination can use a wide variety of materials, such as paper, polymer, ceramic and metal, each material uses different binding methods. Figure 3. Another frequent user of laminated fabric includes the automotive industry, as they like the stylish appearance of certain fabrics but need some additional protection from the elements. Wool blends and leather are the most common varieties of this kind of fabric. Cotton is also the fabric of choice for most people laminating at home. Because cotton fabric can come in so many forms, the laminated form is popular for that very reason.
Yes, laminate versions are available for every kind of fabric so far invented. Cotton remains one of the most popular fabrics for lamination, not just because it can be done at home by almost anyone, but for its sturdiness and availability. Vinyl Technology is an expert at helping you choose the right fabric and the right laminate for your needs.
